The Begelly Arms

Saturday 16th of June saw Begelly arms, Pembrokeshire host their second open Darts tournament with a prize pool of £355. A strong field of players attended to battle for the £175 top prize.

The tournament commenced shortly after 1:30 where a series of high quality group stage games took place to determine the quarter finalist competitors. The pace was set early with 3-0 wins across all 4 groups for james Williams, Ben adams, Stephen McDermot and Paul james. Not to be out done the next games saw 3-1 wins for Ben farr, Dennis Phillips and robert Hughes. The standard on show was clear to see as high checkouts came early from Stephen McDermott 116. former world championship finalist marshal james taking out 138 Witch was followed shortly after by Dennis Phillips taking out 145.

As well as the high checkouts the least Darts for a leg prize was a hot affair. James Williams and rob Hughes each posting 15 darters. The bar was raised by james who posted a 13 dart leg. This was matched by marshal james who ended his group with 4 wins from 4 to book his place in the quarter final. Dennis Phillips and mikey rees also took control of their groups and also came through unbeaten.

Group A was a tight battle for the top spot, Ben farr after narrowly being beaten in his previous game by Nigel Barnett 3-2, seeked a table topping win against james Williams. Ben held his nerve and won 3-1 to top the group and set up a quarter final against group B runner up Ben adams. Runners up form other groups included Paul james and Robert Hughes.

The best of 7 quarter finals began after a short break from proceedings. Mikey rees picked up where he left off from the groups to beat former world championship competitor Robert Hughes 4-0. Meanwhile on the other boards Dennis Phillips and Paul james made it through after marches against james Williams and marshal james. The closest game of the quarters came from Ben farr and Ben adams. Trading breaks and big scores with adams narrowly missing a spectacular 170 in one leg to take the highest out honours from Tom Glover who had posted a brilliant 158. Poised at 3-3 a missed chance from farr handed adams the Darts to win and took his chance to work his way to a semi final match against Paul james. Meanwhile the other semi final was set up to be Mikey rees taking on Dennis Phillips.

From 4 boards to 1 the semi finals took place individually with Ben and Paul taking centre stage first. Ben who was just getting better and better as the tournament went on gained advantage with key breaks of throw witch saw him through to the final winning 5-2. Mikey rees and Dennis Phillips ended in a 5-1 win for the young gun who Produced fantastic power scoring and breaks of throw to match that.

The final took place after quick break and a high intensity match saw Ben take a quick 2-0 lead. Mikey who had played well all day would not be caught lying down and brought the game back to 3-3. Mikey took the next 3 legs to win 6-3 with outstanding scoring and doubling when needed.

Mikey took home the winners share of £175 and an extra £10 for the tournaments lowest leg of 12 Darts. Ben adams picked up £80 for his effort while semi finalists Paul james and Dennis Phillips received £30 each for their performances. Furthest lady was taken by Hannah Lewis who picked up £20 and highest out gaining £10 was won by Tom Glover (158)
